Hello, World! – A Hypothetical Scenario by François Joinneau

François Joinneau
Hello, World!
Have you heard the news?
NASA finally discovered a new civilization in Alpha Centauri!
The problem is:
This civilization seems less evolved than our own, stuck somewhere between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and we can’t communicate with them (at least not yet).
- They may know things we don’t know, or things we forgot.
- They may have genes we don’t have.
- They may have plants we don’t have.
- They may have cures we don’t have.
- They may have animals we don’t have.
But:
- They also may give us diseases we can’t cure.
- We may give them diseases they can’t cure.
- They may not be ready to contact an exogenous civilization, and neither do we.
What do we do from here?
- Should we help them avoid the nightmares we went through during the 5 last centuries (wars and so on)?
- Should we share with them our scientific knowledge and our understanding of the Universe?
OR:
- Should we let them evolve on their own:
- Expecting they become wiser than us?
- Expecting they don’t try to destroy us?
(Update: we did not find this lower-level civilization yet. It is a test.
But, any higher level civilization who found us will have nearly the same questions.)
