Report on the Current Status of Transhumanism in Shandong Province by Zhang Xu

Editor’s Note: The U.S. Transhumanist Party is pleased to provide this status report from our newest Regional Representative, Zhang Xu, who was recently appointed to help advance the spread of transhumanism in Shandong Province, China. We hope that this report will serve as an example of the kind of helpful information we gather about the impact of transhumanism throughout the world, including both obstacles to and opportunities for the growth of our movement.

I. Overall Situation
Shandong’s transhumanism awareness and scattered practices: At present, it is mainly reflected in the science fascination among scientists, academia, and makers, and has not formed a common concept and social movement name in the public domain.
II. Public Awareness and Cognition
Professional Circles: University teachers and engineers, especially medical technicians, know more about artificial intelligence, brain-computer interface, synthetic biology, life extension medicine, etc., and they usually treat them as some “newest technological progresses” instead of philosophy or social movement.
Public in General: Not many people know what transhumanism is but they have a positive and curious attitude towards its applications (AI-assisted workplaces, smart prostheses, wearables, health tech).
Cognitive Biases: Some confuse transhumanism with “science fiction” or “radical body modification,” lacking a clear understanding of its ethical and social significance.
III. Forms of Expression
Academia and Universities: Some lectures, book clubs, and technical exchange events focus on AI, brain-computer interfaces, rehabilitation engineering, and medical and health technology.
Industry and Maker Spaces: Some projects are conducting experiments or starting businesses around intelligent prosthetics, the quantified self, exoskeletons, and assistive robots.
Online and Cultural Levels: On platforms like Bilibili, WeChat official accounts, and Xiaohongshu, bloggers and communities are sharing content on longevity medicine, AI efficiency tools, and human-machine collaboration.
IV. Public Opinion
Positive Side: There is a tendency to acknowledge that “technology improves life,” especially in addressing aging, rehabilitation medicine, disability assistance, and improving efficiency.
Concerns: There are certain concerns and criticism regarding “genetic modification,” “data privacy,” “algorithmic bias,” and “machines replacing human jobs.”
Overall Atmosphere: The public in Shandong is cautiously optimistic about new technologies, but they prioritize their practical value over their philosophical implications.
V. Potential Opportunities
Aging Population and Rehabilitation Needs: Shandong has a large elderly population, providing a natural environment for rehabilitation engineering, exoskeletons, and assistive technologies.
Industrial Advantages: Industries such as marine technology, biomedicine, and intelligent manufacturing are highly relevant to transhumanism and offer potential for cross-fertilization.
Education and Popular Science: Universities have abundant scientific research resources, and young people are highly receptive to new concepts, offering significant potential for future cognitive improvement.
VI. Potential Obstacles
Unfamiliarity with the Concept: The public lacks a clear understanding of transhumanism, and it is easily confused with fiction or extreme imagery.
Ethics and Compliance: Topics such as genetics, healthcare, and human enhancement are sensitive to policy and public opinion, and face limitations in discussion and practice.
Resources and Organizations: Transhumanist-related communities and organizations are relatively underdeveloped, lacking long-term, visible public activities or institutional support.
Talent Mobility: High-end scientific research and innovation talent tend to flow to first-tier cities, leaving local technological development vulnerable to a talent drain.
📌 Conclusion
Transhumanism in Shandong Province currently exists in a state of invisibility, fragmented practice, and low awareness. While society hasn’t yet fully grasped the transhumanist movement, practical needs and projects have emerged at the intersection of technological development, the needs of the aging population, and health and assistive technologies that align closely with core transhumanist issues. This suggests enormous potential for future expansion, but also highlights the need to address the dual challenges of cognitive deficits and ethical sensitivities.
